Situated at the base of Mount Vesuvius, the resort town of
Herculaneum was destroyed by the 79 AD volcanic eruption
along with the more famous Roman city of Pompeii.
While traces of human remains were discovered in Pompeii
during the mid-1700s, it wasn't until the 1980s that
human skeletons were dug out in Herculaneum.
